About the Author
Ambrose Bierce (1842–c. 1914) was an American journalist, satirist, and short-story writer whose mordant wit and dark imagination earned him the nickname "Bitter Bierce." A decorated Civil War veteran, he drew on the horrors of the battlefield for masterful tales such as "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," while his acid-tongued Devil's Dictionary remains a classic of American satire. In 1913 he vanished into revolutionary Mexico and was never seen again, leaving behind one of literature's most enduring mysteries.
