About the Author

Born in Tehran in 1941, Shahin grew up during a period of profound social and political change in Iran. Raised in a family shaped by both Islamic scholarship and spiritual inquiry, her early life exposed her to questions of belief, justice, and the quiet forces that shape human behavior across generations. In childhood, her family embraced the Bahá'í Faith at a time when doing so carried profound personal and social consequences. These experiences would later deepen her lifelong interest in the roots of prejudice, the transmission of belief, and the moral responsibilities individuals carry within society. Years before the Iranian Revolution of 1979, Shahin sensed the growing instability around her. After witnessing a troubling incident in her own household and hearing warnings that revealed a dangerous shift taking hold in society, she sought to better understand the political use of religion and the growing tensions unfolding around her. Trusting her instincts, she made the difficult decision to relocate her family abroad while her children were already studying in England—an act of foresight that would ultimately spare them from much of the upheaval that followed. Though the family later lost businesses, property, and much of the life they had built in Iran, Shahin remained committed to understanding not only what had happened, but why. After eventually settling in the United States, she devoted much of her life to writing, service, and community-building, while continuing to reflect deeply on the human causes of division, violence, and intolerance. Inspired decades later by reports of sectarian violence in the Middle East, Shahin began writing what would become her final work: Shirin: A Hundred Years, Rooted and Uprooted.
